Two key themes emerged from our conversations with these pace car states. Each sought to increase access to MAT through multiple methods, including developing innovative coverage and payment policies. And Medicaid managed care organizations (MCOs) paid close attention to implementation, focusing significant efforts on provider training and quality monitoring activities. In tandem, these efforts helped states address the dual problems of limited provider capacity and low-quality treatment, which are common challenges in places that have seen a drastic increase in opioid use disorder.
