“Rural physicians with a 30-person waiver to prescribe buprenorphine for opioid use disorder (OUD) treat an average of 8.8 consumers, with 53% not treating any consumers at all; rural physicians with a 100-person waiver average 56.9 consumers served. Of the 89.4% or rural physicians that report prescribing buprenorphine, only 56.2% were currently accepting new consumers for treatment.
These findings were reported in “Prescribing Practices of Rural Physicians Waivered to Prescribe Buprenorphine” by C. Holly A. Andrilla, MS; Cynthia Coulthard, MPH; and Davis G. Patterson, Ph.D.”
