“US Senator Edward J. Markey said Friday that Prince’s death from an accidental overdose of fentanyl highlights the need to do more to stop the powerful synthetic painkiller from flooding into the country.
“As sad as it is, Prince’s death to fentanyl is now helping to elevate this issue, so we can have a discussion, a debate in our country, about what we need to do,” Markey said at a meeting with federal drug enforcement and border protection officials in Boston.
He said the United States must demand that China, Mexico, and other countries crack down on drug cartels and other groups that illegally produce fentanyl and then smuggle it into the United States.
“It has to be on the table, at the top of the list” when the US is negotiating with foreign leaders, Markey said, pounding a conference room table. “We have high expectations for what those governments are going to do to keep these illicit synthetic drugs out of our country.”
