“The researchers found a significant increase in NAS incidence rates during the study period in 25 of the 27 states included; there were no significant changes reported in California and South Dakota. The overall NAS incidence rate rose 300%: from 1.5 to six cases per 1,000 hospital births. Researchers also found a wide range in rates for 2013: from 0.7 in Hawaii to 33.4 in Vermont. The annual incidence rate change from 1999 to 2013 was lowest in Hawaii (0.05) and highest in Vermont (3.6). All rates were measured per 1,000 births.
“We anticipated an increase in NAS over our study period, based on studies of nationwide prevalence; however, both the variation in NAS incidence by state and the high incidence in a few states were striking,” Dr. Ko said.”
