“Last week, a federal judge ruled the lawsuit against Macomb County, Michigan, and against county Sherriff Anthony Wickersham could go forward. The lawsuit was filed by the family of David Stojcevski, who died several weeks into a jail sentence given to him for unpaid traffic tickets. The autopsy showed he died from untreated prescription medication withdrawal.
This case has received media attention after the family decided to release a multi-day video recording, taken by the jail, showing David’s gradual and painful death, as he received little if any medical attention. The video documents his fifty pound weight loss, poor appetite, onset of seizures, and his eventual death from prescription opioid and benzodiazepine withdrawal.
The FBI is also investigating this case, after the Justice Department asked them to get involved.
This story “has legs,” meaning it’s getting more media attention from news outlets like ABC News and NPR. This is probably because of the release of the disturbing video; I’ve seen bits of it and it is disturbing, to put it mildly.”
